Sensitising through Media.

Public Service Advertisements

First quarter of 2009 witnessed 7 Public Service Advertisements (PSAs) on child related issues being produced and 3 out of them getting broadcasted 1014 times on leading TV channels at very nominal rates.Concerted and focused efforts of Smile’s top management in sensitizing top media owners (management) about media’s responsibility and role in promoting social issues thus ensured broadcast of the PSAs with lot of cooperation and consideration. Also, 7 PSAs have now become property of Smile Foundation and could be used for advocacy in future as well. The broadcast of PSAs had an outreach of approximately 3.5 million viewers during the media campaign.

San Francisco State University films Smile Foundation



San Francisco State University is making a short film on Smile Foundation. A 25 member team comprising students and professors from The San Francisco State University came to India for the shoot. The crew lead by Prof. Dr. Vinay Shrivastava and Prof Betsy J. Blosser of the Dept. of Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts, College of Creative Arts, San Francisco State University was in India from June 14 to July 9, 2009 and visited many Smile project centres for the shoot. The university bore all the cost as well as expertise required for the film which will be ready by September.

Music For Change

Smile Foundation is now a part of Change Beats, which is an innovative attempt to make a difference through music by sensitising youngsters in developed world about their counterparts living in other parts of the world with the help of music. The programme is supported by International Child Support (ICS). Musicians from The Netherlands make music with young musicians from Tanzania, Suriname and India. The music mix of underdeveloped (India, Brazil, Surinam and South Africa) and developed world (Dutch) aims at bridging the gap between the two worlds.

 

Chhoone Do Aasmaan

A series of 25 short films on the real life stories of children living in the slums of big and small cities were telecast under the campaign Chhoone Do Aasmaan from August 31 to October 31, 2009 on NDTV India. The campaign ended with an hour long talk show hosted by eminent Television journalist Mr. Pankaj Pachauri on November 1, 2009. A special episode of Chhoone Do Aasmaan hosted by child actor Darsheel Safary was also telecast on Children’s Day November 14, 2009.

Chhoone Do Aasmaan was a joint initiative of Smile Foundation and NDTV to bring to light the hidden aspirations of less privileged children. It was an attempt to showcase the dreams and aspirations of the underprivileged children residing in the urban slums across the country.

I am Kalam

Smile Foundation has been working on a parallel film ‘I am Kalam’. The production of the film is complete and it is ready for the premiere at International Film festivals.

The movie I am Kalam, is about a nine year old boy who aspires to overcome all hurdles to chase his dream. The film propagates a dream that every child shall go to school and ‘One day the world shall take notice’. Main Kalam Hoon aims at bridging the gap between the haves’ and have-nots’ and involve the privileged class in the upliftment of the less privileged. The strong narrative, scripted by Mr. Sanjay Chauhan, talks about how every child deserves to live his/her childhood, no matter where he/she is born. The film has a fantastic ensemble of actors, the likes of Bollywood actors Gulshan Grover, Hussan, the child actor from ‘Delhi – 6’, Pitabash (of ‘99’ and ‘Three Idiots’ fame), Beatrice, a famous French theatre actress. The Director of the film Mr. Nila Madhab Panda is a UN award winner filmmaker has been supported by a reputed technical team that comprises of Mohana Krishna, Director of Photography, Kaamod Karade, sound designer and Production Designer Sanjay Dasgupta,.
